After a round of deadly violence, an estimated 80% of Egyptians peacefully voted in the first round of parliamentary elections.

The results are a blow to those who hoped for a transition to a democratic civil society. Media reports indicate that early returns show the Muslim Brotherhood’s political front group — the Democratic Alliance for Egypt — appears to have won as much as 45% of the vote with another 20 - 25% gained by the Islamic Bloc, the political arm of the Salafis. Despite some differences, both the Brotherhood and the Salifis share an Islamist ideology permeated with hatred of both the Israel and the United States.

What are the implications of an Egypt led by the Muslim Brotherhood?

The Simon Wiesenthal Center condemned genocidal rants at a rally involving 5,000 activists, convened Friday at Cairo's most prominent Mosque, by the Muslim Brotherhood.

"It is shocking to hear the Muslim Brotherhood 'activists' vowing to "one day kill all Jews" and "Tel Aviv, Tel Aviv Judgment Day is coming! But the roar of their genocidal rants was matched by a shocking silence of world leaders," charged Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
"Without vociferous condemnation, led by the United States, France and Germany, of such murderous hate, yesterday's rants may yet become tomorrow's official policy in a government in which the Muslim Brotherhood will surely play a pivotal role," Cooper continued.

The Obama Administration and others have entered into direct dialogue with the Muslim Brotherhood and have also demanded an immediate turnover of power to civilian control.
"The failure of world leaders to hold the Muslim Brotherhood accountable for such genocidal hate on the eve of elections in Egypt, will only further embolden the Brotherhood's extremism which threatens religious minorities and could end the Egyptian-Israel Peace Treaty. The Obama Administration must take the lead in publicly demanding that The Muslim Brotherhood and its allies stop their anti-peace campaign and genocidal Jew-hatred rallies or face the end of US massive aid," Cooper concluded.


The Simon Wiesenthal Center is one of the largest international Jewish human rights organizations with over 400,000 member families in the United States. It is an NGO at international agencies including the United Nations, UNESCO, the OSCE, the OAS, the Council of Europe, and the Latin American Parliament (Parlatino).

Paris, UNESCO Headquarters - SWC Dean and Founder Rabbi Marvin Hier led a delegation that met with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova where they discussed last week's vote granting full membership of 'Palestine' into UNESCO.  Rabbi Hier was joined by U.S Ambassador to UNESCO David T. Killion and Simon Wiesenthal Center senior officials.


In the hour-long meeting, the Center’s delegation expressed its indigation at the vote endorsing ‘Palestinian’ membership into UNESCO. Rabbi Hier also protested the statement by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas delivered to the United Nations General Assembly which recogznied only two religions in the Holy Land: Islam and Christianity. The statement effectively deleted Judaism from history and Director-General Bokova asked that her aide obtain the Abbas speech.
 
In the lead up to and following the vote admitting 'Palestine', Director-General Bokova received tens of thousands of petition protests from Simon Wiesenthal Center supporters around the world.

Yesterday in Paris, 'Palestine' was voted in as a member of UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) - the first UN agency to bestow full membership upon the not-yet defined 'Palestine'.

As a result of the vote, the United States, as required by law passed during the Clinton Administration, will cut off some $70 million in funding to UNESCO, or more than 20% of its annual budget.

Tens of thousands of concerned Simon Wiesenthal Center supporters have already joined the protest to UNESCO's Director-General Irina Bokova. If you have not signed the petition, we urge you to do so immediately and to forward to your family and friends.

As a full member of UNESCO, we expect the Palestinian leadership to step up their campaign to erase the history of the Jewish people in the Land of Israel by seeking to have historic and religious sites held sacred by Jews, as well as Christians, and Muslims, to be declared by UNESCO as wholly Palestinian Heritage sites. Last year, UNESCO adopted proposals by Arab states classifying Rachel's Tomb in Bethlehem as a mosque and stating that the Cave of the Patriarchs was "an integral part of the occupied Palestinian Territories".

Clearly, UNESCO's admittance of 'Palestine' is also a serious blow to the United States and others who have urged face-to-face negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
